A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY: OUR AGM ON TUESDAY 18 MAY
Our AGM will be an important moment for taking stock of the work of the Canterbury Society over its first year and planning for the future. We are hoping to screen some old films, which show the city between the wars, and to organise a Fairtrade wine tasting to make our AGM a more social event. It will take place in the United Reformed Church, Watling Street, at 7.30 on Tuesday 18 May. There will be more details in the April Up-date.
PLANTING IN THE BUTTERFLY GARDEN IN POUND LANE: SATURDAY 24 APRIL
We have been working with Canterbury in Bloom, with Butterfly Conservation and with Aidan Potts at the City Council to plan for the rejuvenation of this garden by the river. We are delighted that children from Kingsmead School will be joining with us to plant flowers specially chosen to attract butterflies. We shall also be putting up a plaque in memory of Kenneth Pinnock, who was a leading figure in the Canterbury Society for many years, but who died last year. His recent book was awarded the John Hayes Memorial Prize and his family have generously donated the award to the Canterbury Society.
We shall begin at 10.am by sowing wild flower seeds in the garden along the Franciscan Path and then move on to the Butterfly Garden. Since both gardens are quite small we have to limit the numbers doing the planting to ten: if you would like to come please contact Jan Pahl on J.M.Pahl@kent.ac.uk.
SUMMER WALK TO BROAD OAK: 11.00 am SUNDAY 6 JUNE
Do you know about the plan to build a reservoir between Tyler Hill and Broad Oak? This walk will show you the site where the proposed reservoir would go, as well as leading you through some beautiful countryside. Starting at Tyler Hill Village Hall, it will last around 3 hours, including a pub lunch. The walk will be led by Penny Reilly and is a joint effort between the Canterbury Society and the Blean, Hackington and Tyler Hill Society. There will be more details nearer the time: meanwhile do put this date in your diary. Dogs welcome.
BUTTERFLY GARDEN MEMORIAL FOR KENNETH PINNOCK: SATURDAY 19 JUNE
At 11.00 am on Saturday 19 June we will be unveiling a plaque in the Butterfly Garden in Pound Lane in memory of Kenneth Pinnock, who was a leading figure in the Canterbury Society for many years. His last book, A Canterbury Childhood, was awarded the John Hayes Award for 2009, and we were delighted when the Pinnock family and the John Hayes Award committee decided that the award should go to the Canterbury Society.
We have used the money to plant up the garden with butterfly-friendly plants, working with Canterbury in Bloom and with children from Kingsmead School. The plaque will be unveiled by a member of the Pinnock family and after the ceremony in the Butterfly Garden we will be going for coffee and cakes to the Cafe St Pierre in St Peter's Street.
